In an increasingly competitive business environment, companies are faced with the challenge of constantly adapting to ever-changing conditions. People in management positions ought to bring the most significant benefit to the organization, which entails the know-how of effective leadership (Gonos & Gallo, 2013). Specifically, managers must know how to strike a balance between getting the employees to achieve the set goals and minding their welfare. In the case of Captain Michael Davidson, he employed the autocratic leadership style where he was the center of all the vessel's activities. An autocratic leader is described as one who is high-handed in their administration and all the authority stems from him (Akor, 2014). It is important to observe that this approach is dictatorial in nature, especially since the leader does not make direct contact with the representatives. In the case study, the subordinates described Captain Davidson as a stateroom captain who did not spend time on the bridge or the ship interacting with other employees (Fuller, 2022).

[...] Motivation theories offer explanation on why rituals enhance the intrinsic motivation of employees. Douglas McGregor's Theory X and Y is one of the theories that influences the leadership style in an organization, which may also be used to justify the value of rituals. According to Nikolova et al. (2013), theory X is premised on the classical school where the leader perceives their followers as persons who dislike work and will do everything to avoid it.
