A computer electronic memory allows it to remember how to function. There are two parts of computer memory, namely RAM (random access memory) and ROM (read only memory). The RAM stores the important programs such as the operating system and ROM stores other user data which can be retrieved and changed whenever needed. Holography storage has always had the potential for vast capacity and high data rates. The recent developments in the technology have made this vision a reality. These technical developments are just happening at the right time when there is high demand for fast and vast storage devices. Unlike conventional storage devices holographic devices allow the data to be stores throughout the medium. This volumetric approach has significantly reduced the cost and time of storage. The holographic storage devices not only provide solution to the vast storage capacity needed but are also a solution to quick retrieval of recorded data.
[...] The development of holographic storage medium has frustrated by the availability of the suitable storage components, the complexity of holographic multiplexing strategies and the stringent requirements of the holographic data storage. Another major challenge faced by researchers is that, if too many pages are stored in one crystal, the strength of each hologram is diminished. If there are too many holograms stored on a crystal, and the reference laser used to retrieve a hologram is not shined at the precise angle, a hologram will pick up a lot of background from the other holograms stored around it. [...]
[...] On the other hand the conventional storage devices allow the data to be recorded or retrieved one bit at a time. Therefore holography storage devices significantly improve the data transfer rates. The combined benefits of high data transfer rates with durable and reliable storage media will surely make this technology a compelling choice for the next generation storage devices. In addition to the above, the flexibility in the technology allows wide variety of holographic storage products. Imagine 2 GB of data on a postage stamp GB on a credit card or 300 GB on a disk the size of a DVD. [...]
