Description of activity
The Domaine de La Motte is not far from Narbonne which is in the heart of Languedoc Roussillon.
It includes nearly 175 acres of vineyards in Australia and specializes in the production of Chardonnay. The production area is mainly reserved for brands such as the Foster's Wine Estate. Foster's Wine Estate is the multinational wine and spirits owner and is the administrator of these areas. Surplus production is sold in barrels at market prices.
The average annual production is 1,870 tons of wine, 150,000 cases. The maximum legal yield is 10.4 t / ha.
The management of the Estate is the responsibility of 14 employees who work for them full time. They are also supplemented by seasonal workers at harvest time.
Production is facilitated by the high-tech equipment and is used for high quality wine.
A. Preparation of wine
The materials for the production come from three areas. They are then, transferred to the cellar for processing.
The fields are harvested at night by three machines that collect about 3 tons of grapes. Each machine is emptied into bins that have a capacity of 10 tons. These are then loaded on to a truck that makes more than one trip to the cellar. It makes about 20 to 25 trips in one night for a total of 180 to 240 tons of produce.
The grapes are poured into a Conquet and then they go to the presses. The Domaine de La Motte has four 30-ton presses. Each press is run twice in one night (Or even three times for some of them).
Once pressed, the juice is poured into one of their stainless steel tanks that can hold 700 hl. The cellar of the Domaine has a capacity of 29,000 hl.
Approximately 1800 tons of grapes are harvested annually, which produces about 13,500 hl. The Domaine de La Motte also provides an additional range of spirits by buying grapes from another property that makes about 2200 t. / year.

[...] The commoditized treatment cannot be applied for all types of wine. The air-controlled transportation is desirable for cold or hot countries. In Europe the additional cost of 20% to 50% for a temperature-controlled transportation is acceptable only for wines with high added value. The ideal control temperature should be between 16° and 20 °. Now, there are devices that are placed with the wines on their journey to record the temperature in the transporter. Inside the transporters, the more the number of bottles are, the more likely they will be damaged (cross-docking, store delivery). [...]

[...] The packages that travel in these carriers are in sealed containers and travel with other goods. Consolidators consolidate their shipments for a full container and are charged accordingly. A sea journey is long and risky for wine (temperature-controlled shipping must be chosen) but the prices are attractive. Air transport Air-transport is perfect for sending samples or small amounts (less than 200 kg) in an emergency or for transporting early wines. This form of transport is more expensive and administrative constraints are the same as for other forms of international transport. [...]
[...] The business management system This is the tracking of sales and prices in the UK and Australia (the only countries where Domaine de la Motte is sold. This allows the company to adjust its production and possibly predict the sale of a surplus of grapes in the event of declining demand. C. The inventory management system Inventories consist of finished products (different wines) and are stored in the cellar that is located not far from Narbonne. It is the Fosters EMEA sales network that provides the monthly forecast of sales which indicates the level that the Estate has to stock The elements of dashboard logistics The key is to outsource what does not justify a storage area or special employees at Domaine de la Motte. [...] They act as logisticians are the traders who care the most. • The major retailers are also involved in the logistics of the wine. The wine is bought directly from the producers and they transport them to the stores. When they organize wine fairs, they implement a consistent approach. Service providers It is they who manage the details of the logistics i.e. transportation and storage. The Domaine de La Motte uses: • Conventional carriers that treat wine as general merchandise (which allows an economy of scale). [...]
