On a global vision, containers are generally carried from the port of Fos-sur-Mer (Marseille) by river boats until Lyon. Then, they arrive at Lyon Terminal, where they are unloaded. Containers are generally stocked in the storage areas until they are loaded on trucks or trains. From Marseille, it takes 36 hours to reach Lyon by boat (when a truck takes five hours). Lyon Terminal is a multimodal platform including railway (3.200 meters) and specific areas reserved for road transport companies.
Today, Lyon Terminal focuses its development on the river traffic between Fos and Mer. Almost 90% of main shipping lines use Lyon Terminal facilities. It is also a main partner for the European intermodal operators like the advanced ports Marseille or Sète. The company aims to develop the logistic services between rail and river in the multimodal way, which can benefit the rail transport from the masses that can be conveyed by river transportation and benefit the river transport from the vast railway network. We can anticipate that Lyon Terminal will develop its businesses and capabilities through Northern, Eastern and Southern Europe.
