Japan is said to be a difficult market to penetrate and this will probably not change overnight. What makes Japan a hard business partner is its combination of strong cultural roots and rapid economic success. For foreign businessmen, this dichotomy is very confusing, especially in interpersonal relationships.
Today, when working with the Japanese, there are many people whose training and experience have contributed to the 'westernization' like the traditional negotiators of 'naniwabushi'. That is why when you meet someone who has just returned from a business trip to Japan, they feel that the environment in Japan is similar to New York. Japan has, for long time, undertaken modernization, but it is still an old island nation with a rich past and heritage.
