Crossroads Juvenile Center - detention facility, frequency
In contemporary times, there is an increasing tendency for juvenile involvement in crime. The frequency and the severity of the crimes has increased so much that there are call for trial of delinquents as adults in extreme cases. The juvenile justice system however has a stronger emphasis on correctional activities and giving the under-age offenders a chance to change and make something useful of their lives. The Crossroads Juvenile Center is a detention facility in New York, it development and operations demonstrate the desire of the juvenile justice system to effects changes in the children admitted to these systems.
The Crossroads Juvenile Center is a detention facility for Juveniles awaiting trial or the results of their trial. Juveniles admitted to these facilities are in the process of the juvenile justice system as opposed to disciplinary measures from the parents or the educational system ("Juvenile Resident Information"). The Crossroads Juvenile Center is well protected and the children in the facilities are provided with all the basic needs and social needs.
[...] The Crossroads Juvenile Center responded to these needs by adopting a platform that nurtures the children and encourages socialization. For example, internal groupings are small as part of a localized management policy. The small size of the groups, the relative homogeneity and supervision creates a platform for friendly interactions that in turn lead to the development of internal support structures (Rodriguez, 2014). Where undesirable behavior is observed, children are reprimanded gently and withdrawn from a group for some time to reduce the negative effects of isolated deviance on the rest of the population. [...] The Crossroads Juvenile Center only admits juvenile delinquents between the ages of ten and fifteen because of the ease in delivery of the required level of service in this age group(“Juvenile Resident Information”). Even then, the children are subdivided internally to create groups that are small and manageable and with homogenous characteristics (Day, 2014). Children are encouraged to mingle and make friends in these groups as part of the support structure. This local management policy is a response to the social need for care to correct behavior as opposed to strictness that hardens the children and leads to future involvement in crime. [...]

[...] From the development and management of the Crossroads Juvenile Center, it is clear that the juvenile justice system is concerned with changing the course of lives for the underage offenders. There are indication that most criminals have a juvenile records in the US, indicating that crime manifests from a tender age. Therefore, to reverse the incidence of crime, it follows that the best strategy is to reduce the criminal orientation in the juvenile offenders as opposed to hardening them and preparing them for criminal careers. The case of the Crossroads Juvenile Center demonstrates the willingness of the juvenile justice systems to make these changes on the children. [...]
