Since it was registered as a corporation in 1943, IKEA has developed into an international group, present in approximately 43 countries. IKEA gets its name from the initials of Ingvar Kamprad, Elmtaryd and Agunnaryd, located in Småland, Sweden. Ingvar Kamprad was just 17 when he registered IKEA store in 1943. Since the birth of the company, IKEA and its economic environment have changed enormously.
Today the brand enjoys an international reputation and sells its products worldwide. Ingvar Kamprad is now the senior advisor to the Supervisory Board and Anders Dahlvig the Chief Executive Officer of the IKEA Group.
In the year 1965, the IKEA Group became the world leader in the furniture market. Specializing in furniture and interior design, shops offer a wide assortment of more than 9500 useful products, uniquely designed and at a cheaper price. The launch of its businesses in Almhult located in Sweden in 1943, IKEA has grown steadily. Presently, we record 283 stores, including 24 franchisees in 40 countries, which employ about 118,000 people around the world.
We can add to those 45 purchasing offices in 31 countries, and customer delivery centers in 16 countries. With 23 stores, IKEA (France) is the second largest furniture maker in France, with 12.2% market share in 2007. In 2007, with a little over 9 billion Euros of turnover (sales), the French furniture and interior design is still a growing and a dynamic sector. The sales in furnishings and household equipment showed its best performance since 1977.
The enthusiasm of the French in terms of decoration and interior design is recent and consumer behavior in this area is still evolving before reaching a certain maturity. According to a study conducted among a sample of 800 individuals (representative of the French population, Cetelem 2007), the average household budget in interior design is now around 370 Euros per year.
According to this study and the French population its considered a necessity to work and develop its habitat , essential (82% favorable opinion) while remaining are personal pleasure (79% favorable opinion). But the most significant development since the last survey conducted in the year 2002 is the awareness, in a context of soaring real estate prices, the potential impact of the decoration and internal architecture and the material value increase of their home (78% favorable opinion or an increase of 12 points over five years).
In the year 2007, furniture and interior decoration, recorded a growth of over 7%, which was one of the strongest and highest growths over the past thirty years. This represents "an increase in popularity in the recent years, for the layout, construction and decoration of their interiors," says Christophe Gazel, director of the Institute for Promotion and Study of Furniture. Several strategies, implemented by distributors, have been promising, including the current consumption of furniture rather than being viewed as purchasing investments.
The variation of the collections, similar to what we observe in the world of fashion, is now part of everyday life of professional furnishing and interior decoration. In addition, the development of decorative shelves in furniture stores also appeared as one of the highlights of this development.
