The Bearings Market in India has a very strong foundation though it is not that visible. TATA Bearings the subsidiary of TATA Steel is one of the largest bearing manufacturers in Eastern India and the fourth largest in the country. It is situated in Kharagpur, 117km from Kolkata. TATA Bearings is a for profit company that produces Bearings such as Ball-bearings, Magneto Bearings etc. Its main target sector is the Automobile Sector which comprises of 45%. TATA Bearings is one of the major players in the Original Equipment Market. TATA Bearings has a pretty flat organizational structure and hence very effective communication is prevalent, the organizational climate is very good with all possible facilities at the employees' disposal. Now we see that TATA Bearings is facing fierce competition from SKF, FAG, NRB and other foreign firms. It does not have an aggressive marketing strategy, nor does it have a wide range of products like its competitors. The records maintenance in Bearings is not up to the mark and hence difficulties arise when trying to access data. On the surface level bearings looks very promising but an in-depth analysis shows that it is not all that great. But on the whole the company has come a long way from where it was to where it is now. The internship Project given to me was to verify the Procurement Data and identify areas where costs could be reduced. The sorting charges of companies were to be tabulated and the amount due was to be reported.

[...] Background TATA Bearings is a profit center of TATA Steel Ltd with its manufacturing facility located in Kharagpur. It is the largest manufacturing unit in the Eastern part of India and the fourth largest bearings manufacturer in the country. TATA Bearings originally began its operation in 1978 under Metal Box India Ltd. During those days the plant could not achieve its designated capacity and incurred financial losses, its capacity was only 3.0 million bearings per annum. Consequently the unit was taken over by TISCO in 1983, while MRTP clearance was received only in June 1985. [...]
[...] The other amounts had not been recovered, this is because though TATA Bearings has a pretty good procurement system it has not been able to maintain its records very efficiently. There are records which overlap and in some cases the two completely different bills have been compiled into one, thus making it difficult to keep a track of the exact records. There have also been instances where I noticed that the amount to be debited to the sub-contractor had been debited to the company itself. [...]
