The CNR or Compagnie Nationale du Rhône has several main activities:
- First, it is an independent electricity producer. Thanks to its electric plants, the company produces around 16 billion kwh that have been sold directly to the European market since 2001. In order to do this, the CNR signed a partnership agreement with EDF regarding the production of electricity and with Electrabel, EDF and Industrial Services of Geneva regarding its commercialization.
- Then, it provides engineering services as a river developer in France and abroad.
- Finally, it runs several ports and platforms along the Rhône.
At present, from Fos sur Mer to Lyon, the CNR runs 19 dams, 19 electric power plants and 14 locks on the Rhône, and its has also equipped 29 platforms.
[...] On the bank of the Rhône and directly linked to rail networks and roads, the goal of Lyon Terminal through the Port Edouard Herriot is to make a connection between several means of transportation river and sea, rail and trucks - that is to say between several companies shipping companies, trucks companies, SNCF, etc. that firms may outsource transportation to. In the port, the only types of items handled by Lyon Terminal are containers. Those containers are never open and therefore what is inside does not matter in the way they are dealt with. [...]
[...] It is in this case that Lyon Terminal has to deal with empty containers 2 Organization of the operations Unloading When barges, trains or trucks arrive at the Port with containers, the first operation in the Port is to unload them from the barges, trains or trucks. This operation is carried out by reach trucks drivers. At that point, there are two possibilities: - Containers are warehoused (Cf. part II.2.b.) - They are shipped again directly to their final destination (Cf. [...]
[...] Regarding Lyon Terminal costs, the handling of one container in the Port of Lyon Edouard Herriot, that is to say either unloading or loading (one movement), is charged It takes into account fixed costs, drivers, fuel, etc. This price of the movement of the container itself might appear a bit expensive to transportation companies but if we consider the price of storage, it is not the case: for the first eight days a container is warehoused in the port, it is free of charges. [...]
[...] Quality Like in any other company, quality of the service provided to customers is a major issue. Quality is ensured through the step of controlling we have mentioned earlier. Indeed, it is a way of avoiding as much as possible probable human errors that might have a bad impact on the company's image. Quality is also a question of security: Lyon Terminal has its own services of securities and the supply chain is done in a way that none knows what is inside the containers. f. [...]
[...] Lyon Terminal is the one we are going to look at more closely because it involves logistics: flows of merchandise and storage that depend on planning and a precise organization LYON Terminal Port Edouard Herriot The Port of Lyon-Édouard Herriot, in the heart of Rhône-Alpes, the second French economic area, was given as a concession of installation and exploitation to the CNR in 1937. Thanks to this concession and the creation in 1992 of a subsidiary called Lyon-Terminal which is aimed at the commercial exploitation and the harbor management of river sites, the CNR can therefore offer commercial services to companies.
