The Use of Timber resources traces back to the era of early man, where they used wood to make fire. Since then, timber has become one of the important resources for development. Trees can be categorized into two types; hardwoods and softwoods. Due two the different characteristics of these trees, they are used for different purposes. Hardwood timber has pores, making it weather resistant and suitable for construction, and making furniture. Softwood timber does not have pores hence are easy to cut. Softwood timber is used to in paper industries, to make construction materials, and for furniture (Rae, 2009).
There are 100 times more hardwood tree species than softwood species. Both tree species can be found in six types of forest areas in the world. These forest types include; Mediterranean forest, tropical forests, temperate deciduous forest, tropical monsoon forests, coniferous forests and temperate evergreen forests. Large scale uses of timber are from coniferous forests, tropical forests, and temperate deciduous forests. Figure 1.0 below shows how forest types are distributed globally (Rae, 2009).
[...] Pulp and paper industries use timber of low quality and wastes from sawmills to produce pulp and paper products. Woodchip manufacturers also use poor quality timber to produce paper and other products (Australia Bureau of Statistics, 2003) Natural Uses of Timber Timber and Carbon Cycle Growth of trees is important in the carbon cycle, since it uses atmospheric carbon during wood biomass production. This process is referred to as carbon sequestration. The carbon which is sequestered is maintained in the timber even after a tree has been cut. Hence, trees act as carbon sinks. [...]
