Abstract

Essilor has a portfolio of strong brands. Varilux deals with progressive lenses that currently dominate the world market. The glasses represent about 95% of the activity of Essilor and the rest can be classified in other categories, including optical instruments and various other products that refer to optics.

Essilor Group is a global company that is based in Europe, North America, Latin America and Asia, and is engaged in numerous partnerships. At the end of 2008, it had 26, 000 employees, with a turnover of 2.9 billion euros at the end of 2007. The group also had 215 prescription laboratories worldwide, 16 production units and 3300 patents.

Founded in 1849 in Ligny-en-Barrois, Essel originated from a workers' cooperative called the Society of Eyewear Manufacturers, who would become SL and Essel. In 1972, Essel and Silor (founded in 1931), both companies that dominated in the eyewear market, merged and created the Essilor Group.
