Henry Gantt, the celebrated mechanical engineer and management expert, not only developed the project management tools - Gantt chart, but also advocated the interpersonal theory as a pioneer. In addition, he designed "task and bonus" system in his later years, which have made a great influence on today's management so far. For understanding the contribution of Gantt more detailed, first, our group will make a brief introduction to his life and detail his background and experience in this essay. Second, we will make an overview of his three important theories, and describe the factors affecting the development of the theory and the application of the theory in the enterprise.
Henry Gantt was born in a peasant family in Maryland. Childhood hardships made Gantt understand the importance of diligence, thrift, and self-reflection. He graduated with honors from Johns Hopkins University in 1880, and then had a further learning in Stevens Institute of Technology. The experience in the teaching of natural sciences and mechanical technology had a significant impact on his future career. Henry Gantt is known to have cooperated with the notable scientist Frederick Taylor in the further enhancing the theory of scientific management. They worked together for a period of time and did a few extraordinary critical work. Later, Gantt moved on in his career by pursuing career management, where he managed to act as a famous sought after consultant.

However, they often had an argument. But, it was Gantt Taylor question and refutation made scientific management movement richer and reasonable connotation(John Zhang,2008). He was credited not only with the break through invention of Gantt Charts, namely, the production plan progress chart, but also the “task and bonus” system, which changed the way for Scientific Management.
