Developing skills for effective communication will assist an individual in personal as well as professional affairs in that it allows individuals the opportunity to work together in a more efficient manner. This would bring value in terms of personal and professional relationships and fulfillment of successful endeavors for the organization as well as for the individual. This paper is an attempt to examine my communication effectiveness and will give me insight as to what areas I may be weak in.
Baack defined communication as "transmitting, receiving, and processing information. Information consists of any item that evokes or has meaning. Baack went on to say, for messages to evoke a meaning; the recipient must fully understand the meaning of information. Information takes form in a variety of ways, including terms of words, symbols, figures, numbers, a single concept and sets of concepts" (Baack, 2013, "1.1").
The process of communication includes crucial elements, such as the sender and receiver of the information, the source by which the information is given, the purpose behind the information, the methods, and strategies used to relay the message, and the media regarding these messages. The mere definition of the communication process implies there is a need for a clear and concise message.

[...] There can always be different interpretations of any message whether the individual seems to be listening or not. Society in general has communication gaps. Another can, definitely misinterpret what is stated by one. Those in business functions try to avoid communication gaps at all cost; it can be quite impossible to do so. [...] To answer the rhetorical question if I have communication gaps, I would have to say yes, I do. There is always a chance that another can misinterpret what one has stated about a certain message or in my case the assumption that my husband understood what I meant. The media I used was not appropriate for him specifically, the visual aids did not help because he was not paying attention, and the reiteration of specific information did no good because he was in la la land.
