The UK has always had a tumultuous relationship with the European Union, seeds of Britain's dissent can be traced all the way back to the EEC the precursor to the modern-day EU. Following WWII EEC was set up with the intent of bolstering trade relationships within Europe based on the hypothesis that countries that had robust trade relations were less likely to go to war with one another.
