This business report compares the employment opportunities in the film industry for women in France and in the UK. France has more films produced and released than the UK, meaning more people are employed in the French film industry. Certain factors create obstacles for women in building their career. Sexism and social conditioning, maternity and family life are common ones. Then, there are the ongoing issues which specifically apply to the film industry. Some of them apply to both France and the UK. More films are directed by men than by women in Europe. Key creative roles are mostly male dominated. Both countries have high-production volumes. There are also differences in women's employment in the two countries. In France, there are more key positions where women earn more money than men. France has developed a financial benefit to encourage gender equality in key roles. France has the highest number of films made by women in Europe. There is a higher percentage of women in French film crews than in the UK. This analysis assures that there are more employment opportunities for essential creative positions in France than there are in the UK.

Since January 2019, France has instituted a financial benefit for films with women in key creative roles, encouraging gender balance and pushing people to employ women in lead production roles, in exchange for a 15% bonus subsidy on top of the amount funded by the CNC. (CNC, 2019) Additionally, an event called ‘Fifty-Fifty by 2020′ was launched during the 2016 Cannes Festival, in order “to pursue this work and raise international awareness of gender equality in film production” (Unesco, 2019).
