Tony Kuschner's play Angel in America is full of contrasts, disparities, and opposite views. Many things are shown at completely opposite ends of the spectrum. There are many differing opinions and complete disagreements that not a large number of things that are constant and similar in the film. However, there is a constant theme which is consistent in almost every character, the feeling of disappointment. Whether it is due to the position they are in, their profession, their religion, or any number of other factors, there are expectations of the characters in this play. There are expectations from other characters within the play as well as expectations from the audience. Each and every character fails to meet what is expected of them.

[...] Perhaps Joe cannot do what Roy expects him to do because Roy has failed to fulfill the expectations of a lawyer. Perhaps Louis cannot meet Prior's expectations because he simply did not expect his lover to be so close to death at such a young age. Who does this all come back to eventually? It all comes back to God. God has failed the expectations of each and every person he created, and is supposed to love. He has left his angels, and left his people. [...]
[...] It is hard to always augment you behavior to what you are supposed to do, but Roy has an obligation. Lawyers take oaths to uphold the law, and based on Roy's comments about his past actions, he deserves to be disbarred. There are expectations that partners have in this play also. Prior and Louis have been lovers for four and a half years. When you are in a loving relationship with someone for that long, then a person expects their partner to stick by them, especially in hard times or times of crisis. [...]
