8 Mile is the story of well-known rapper Eminem's humble beginnings in inner city Detroit, Michigan. Eminem plays himself in the movie. The story of Eminem in this movie is one of everyday struggles. Eminem starts out freestyle battling other rappers in a shelter and chokes at first. After going through daily struggles which bring about inspiration within him, Eminem finds the strength to win a freestyle battle tournament. The movie ends with a hopeful outlook on Eminem's future as he works on a demo to get noticed by a label and become a professional artist.
The entire movie speaks to the frustrating difficulty of trying to move up in the social ladder. The overall argument is that hard work and relentless perseverance through conflict will eventually pay off for an individual trying to improve his of her life. Even though Eminem found himself in a dire economic situation, his determination to succeed despite the enormous amounts of pain present everywhere in his life allowed him to move on to become what he wanted to be. This movie speaks to anyone who is going through struggles and wants to get out of harsh environments through individual effort.

[...] When there is happiness in the movie it is a rare sight to behold as well as an occurrence which only comes after a disproportionate amount of struggle and heartache. This movie is about the underdog and contains inspiration for people to keep clawing and struggling as long as it takes to better their situation. The gritty music and dim lighting create an atmosphere of dread where good moments are the exception rather than the rule. These two aspects of the film embody the tension the protagonist, Eminem, feels constantly unless he is pursuing his dream. Then, there is hope. [...]

The most significant aspect of the film in terms of conveying the difficulty and necessity of struggle is the music. Since this is a Hip-Hop film, of course Hip-Hop would be present at the forefront. The music on the whole is gritty and strong-willed. Placement of appropriate music at integral parts of the film reinforces the visual and thematic ideas being presented. [...]

Hip- Hop music is especially well suited since it largely involves voices of disenfranchised individuals who succeeded despite their backgrounds, just like Eminem. Also, the exclusivity granted to the genre within the movie is an effect of a focus on its value to the types of people represented in the movie. Inner city citizens rely on a different kind of music than those who are well-off because they need a different type of energy to survive. [...]
