Genre is a term used in the world of arts to represent a class of creative works that reveal certain key characteristic. Different works of art are classified into different genres depending on their characteristics and uniqueness. Therefore, genre is very much essential when it comes to defining, describing and typifying various works of art. Different forms of art are therefore placed in different classes depending on their characteristics. Genre has been of significant importance to different forms of art. For instance, in sculpture, architecture and two-dimensional art, genre enables people to differentiate the three forms since they are very much interlinked (Elizabeth, 2000). For instance, both sculpture and the architecture are three dimensional.
Besides, sculpture and the two dimensional art come in different dimensions but they still share many features. For instance, they are both painted and one cannot classify them on this basis. Genre therefore ensures that the conspicuous differences are used in bringing out the difference. Consequently, using genre ensures that the characteristics which are not common are used in classifying the different forms of each of the above forms of art. This therefore unfolds the reality which may be unseen in art.
